Launched in 2019, we have already grown to over 600k monthly unique visitors and beyond 100k newsletter subscribers, but there is much more to be done to both grow our readership and expand our scope beyond media to become the leading insights platform for the European technology industry. Our team is expanding rapidly (currently at c.50 people) and we are looking for more talented people to join.

The role provides daily research support to all functional Sifted teams, with responsibilities including defining our data infrastructure and assisting with the company’s forecasts, budgets, and KPI reporting. From analysing content performance for journalists through to creating insight-driven financial reporting, the Finance and Operations Data Analyst will be fundamental to the long-term success of Sifted.

The job will be based in Shoreditch, London, with the expectation that 2 days a week will be spent in the office. The candidate will report, on an interim basis, to Sifted’s Head of Strategy, working closely with all team leads in line with various projects (from the Head of Product through to the Head of Marketing). In the longer term, the ambition is to grow Sifted’s data capabilities – especially in terms of FP&A. 

2.0 Finance and Operations Data Analyst

Overview of role

As Sifted’s first ever Finance and Operations Data Analyst, you’ll deliver crucial business insights, build a data-informed company culture and take a lead on our financial reporting. In this multifaceted role, the remit will include making financial projections for Sifted’s leadership whilst creating broader data capabilities that benefit decision-making across teams. 

Whilst this candidate will report to Sifted’s Head of Strategy initially, it is envisaged that they will, over time, work closely with a Finance Director or Chief Data Officer. Additionally, they will play a pivotal role across company projects (from systems implementations to understanding subscription trends) in order to achieve business-wide OKRs. Joining the team at this crucial moment in Sifted’s growth will allow the Finance and Operations Data Analyst to dictate the pace of the company’s data maturity. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide and own the Company’s budgets and forecasts, variance analysis and creation of KPI reports. Provide insight and analysis on performance drivers and trends to enable an early understanding of business risks and opportunities. 
  • Through cross-functional company projects, effectively collaborate across a diverse team with differing levels of data experience.
  • Use communication skills and a passion for teaching others data processes, so they can better serve themselves through a basic means of requesting data input in the form of tickets. 
  • Provide robust analytical and financial decision support and expertise. Be able to deliver ad hoc financial analysis as requested from Senior Management efficiently and effectively to
  • Identify and develop stakeholder relationships internally and externally that add value to the business in the short, medium and long term.
  • Using your skills to create three-statement (P&L, Cash Flow, Balance Sheet) models from scratch. Provide scenario modelling, evaluate new business proposals, attrition, and new business insights
  • Develop, document and embed scalable finance analysis processes and controls to support significant company growth 

What is needed 

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of the following:

  • Someone who has 3-6 years of working in a data role, with a strong financial background. (eg experience of modelling P&Ls, CashFlows and Balance sheets and their interactions)  
  • Understands the need for quality data and values the role it plays when it comes to informed decision-making.
  • Basic knowledge of Python or R combined with advanced experience of Excel / basic database tooling.
  • Enjoys simplifying complexity through effective visualisation and analysis.
  • Have a proven track record working in a complex business environment and communicating with a range of stakeholders.
  • Have the ability to influence and strategically partner.
  • Be able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Experience in a similar analyst role with a strong track record of delivering similar work is highly desirable.
  • Experience with any of Qlik Sense / Power BI / Tableau / Looker / Google Data Studio or other BI tools.
  • Knowledge of data analytics and digital engagement tooling, including Google Analytics, Piano, Sailthru is a plus.
  • Experience of the startup world would be a plus.
